FAQ

Dog prosthesis questions

Can a dog use a prosthetic leg after an amputation?

Yes. We make custom forelimb and hindlimb prostheses for amputee dogs to restore mobility, function and quality of life. Whether a prosthesis suits your dog depends on its overall health, the condition of the limb and a proper fit, so the decision is made with your veterinarian and our specialists.

What does a prosthesis change for a three-legged dog?

Your dog can use all four legs again. A prosthesis supports body alignment and can reduce the risk of compensatory problems caused by carrying the load on three legs. Many dogs become more active and enjoy longer walks again.

Can a prosthesis help with arthritis or joint problems?

No. A prosthesis replaces a missing part of a limb. For arthritis, joint problems or injuries of an existing limb we make custom orthoses (braces): see Orthotics & Prosthetics.

What is the difference between a prosthesis and an ITAP?

Our prostheses are external devices made for the residual limb. An ITAP (intraosseous transcutaneous amputation prosthesis) is a bone-anchored implant that passes through the skin and connects the limb directly to an external prosthesis; it requires surgery and is planned from a CT scan with your veterinary surgeon. See Custom-made implants.
